Synopsis: When the battered body of a university administrator is discovered in his office, the Chancellor, fearing scandal, appoints Robert Dory, a wealthy donor, to conduct an internal investigation. Cory, who is at work on a study of the mystery novel, is also the originator of what he calls the Women in Cars mystery. Its premise is that our illusions about life are more interesting than the ordinary lives we lead. His theory gets tested when he becomes entangled in a real mystery.

  About the Author:  B. J. Leggett is Professor Emeritus of The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where he held the title of Distinguished Professor of Humanities. He is the author of numerous studies of modern poetry and criticism, including books on A. E. Housman, Philip Larkin, and Wallace Stevens. Women in Cars is his third novel.
